kris - seriously, what do you think isn't advanced about postgreSQL ? it supports multivalues, custom data types and most importantly "table inheritance".

By commercial RDBMS you presumably mean Oracle ? So what do current commercial RDBMS do that postgreSQL doesnt ?

agree about Android - this will become very important over the next 3 years. Disagree about PostgresSQL - it isn't advanced at all, quite the opposite upon investigation compared to current commercial RDBMS out there. not sure where mySQL will go now either, now it is owned by Oracle.

Another omission would be "CouchDB". I really need to get around to investigating this promising technology. CouchDB is an alternative to relational (ie SQL) databases that eliminates much of the complexity of interfacing object oriented code with relational backend storage. Looks like this has the potential for big performance gains and simpler, more rapid application development. CouchDB also seems to do something clever with Javascript :)

Definitely worth watching the whole NoSQL movement and CouchDB in particular.

Slightly embarrassing to have forgotten about "Android", Googles open source Linux based mobile device operating system.

Most people have no idea, but open source software is going to be critical to the security of our digital freedom in the 21st century. For Google to make a mobile operating system of such fantastic quality available as free open source software is an incredible "victory" and comes at exactly the right time.

I'm looking forward to doing some work integrating Android and Drupal later in the year

Nice post. A correction, GIMP - It's "GNU Image Manipulation Tool", Not "Graphical Image Manipulation Tool".
